On Thursday 9 March we launched our 'Summer '06' Indian Music project, with a workshop given by Dr Vijay Rajput (vocalist) and Shahbaz Khan (tabla), introduced and accompanied by David Clarke on harmonium.
The workshop followed on from a warmly received concert given last November in the King's Hall by Vijayji and Shahbaz, and offered students a introduction to the sound world, techniques and practices of Hindustani classical music. About 25 students attended, and entered fully into the spirit of the participatory moments! The event generated much enthusiasm, and many of the participants signed up for the next stage of the project - a series of group lessons on voice or tabla. A number of sets of tabla have been bought for the purpose, and this is the first step of a larger spend on instruments for the practice of World Musics.
