The second ‘Breaking into Music’ event took place earlier this term at The Sage Gateshead. Once again Careers Services from the region’s universities joined forces with the CETL to set up this careers event geared specifically to the music industry. Two hundred students were there on the night – this exceeded all expectations. There was standing room only as students gathered to hear a range of speakers talking about the way they have ‘broken into’ their own careers which included music promotion, music therapy and community music education.
Following the presentations students networked, over a glass of wine, with representatives from wide range of organisations offering professional development support for musicians…
‘I thought it was a great event and I personally found it stimulating and great to chat with the students’ (Sarah Kekus, Head of Schools Programme, The Sage Gateshead)
‘I enjoyed the event and have had some follow-up as well which always makes it worthwhile!’ (Cath Critchley, NCSP Northern Cultural Skills Partnership)
Rachelle Pereira from Newcastle University Careers Service worked with the CETL team to put on the event and felt it was ‘a really great example of collaborative working!’
Positive feedback from students means that Breaking into Music will be a regular fixture during the life of the CETL.
‘The evening was great, I found out about all sorts of jobs in the music industry I hadn’t previously considered and being able to talk to people who were still struggling early on in their careers really helped me get a true picture of what its like ‘out there’’ (Newcastle University student)
The Breaking into Music event forms part of the Working in Music project.
