A new classical music festival has been organised by students from the International Centre for Music studies at Newcastle University.
Andrew Novell, one of the organisers told me:
“As a group of students spanning the different stages of the BA and BMus Year Abroad programs we decided to create a great opportunity for student musicians during the last week of the semester - a period of time that is usually free for music students. We thought that creating an event such as the ICMus Summer Music Festival would benefit many students and increase their involvement within the music department”.
Having had the initial idea, the students decided to run the event professionally from the outset. They went ahead and applied to both Newcastle University’s NCL+ fund and the CETL Student Project Fund – impressing fund-holders so much with their enthusiasm and business like approach and were awarded the maximum amount of funding in both cases!
Dr. Richard Wistreich, Head of Undergraduate Studies and Head of Performance leads the CETL Collective Performance Project is delighted that the students have embarked on this new venture and said:
“The International Centre for Music Studies is currently enjoying a phenomenally vibrant period of performance activity in just about every conceivable genre of music, reflecting the extraordinary range of creativity and sheer level of talent among its students. What is particularly exciting to witness is the explosion in the number of flourishing bands, orchestras, choirs, chamber groups and other ensembles that have sprung up in the past couple of years, initiated, organised, led and populated by ICMuS students, who somehow manage to find energy and time beyond the call of their studies to play and sing together. It’s a state of affairs which we have always dreamed of!”
The plan is for the festival to become a permanent fixture in the ICMuS calendar. For more information and to book tickets visit the festival website
