Lessons into Practice: Teaching and Learning Collective Performance Small Ensembles at Higher Educational Level

Thursday, 17 September 2009 in the Armstrong Building
A one day symposium focusing on collective performance in smaller ensembles, bringing together students, tutors and researchers to share ideas, research and experience of teaching and learning in small ensembles, and to discuss the design of ensemble teaching programmes and the professional development needs of ensemble teachers. This symposium comes towards the end of a two-year Palatine-funded research project led by Dr Richard Wistreich (International Centre for Music Studies, Newcastle University) and Dr Jane Ginsborg (Royal Northern College of Music, Manchester) entitled Promoting Excellence in Small Group Music Performance: Teaching, Learning and Assessment which has been looking at various aspects of work in different genres and settings, including folk and traditional, popular and classical music, university and conservatory. The symposium will enable participants in this project, including tutors and coaches, students and the researchers, to share their work and open up the discussion to include colleagues from other institutions.
