The University of Newcastle acts as lead institution for the CETL, with Durham as a second foundation partner. Newcastle University's International Centre for Music Studies ( ICMuS) and Durham University's Music Department have a long history of collaboration and co-operation, and the CETL is based principally on their established excellence.
The Open University is also recognised as bringing a further dimension of excellence, through its longstanding and extensive pedagogical experience in open and distance learning delivered to students of diverse backgrounds. Its residential school at Durham fosters close links between the Open University and Durham Music departments.
The future development of the other Unis4NE institutions (Northumbria, Sunderland and Teesside) is integral to the success of the CETL. They are regarded as essential partners in the general dissemination strategy, and also bring their own areas of expertise to particular projects.
The Sage Gateshead (an associate partner) is a centre for music whose home is an acclaimed new Norman Foster building - a £70M investment. The organisation will help link the universities to one another and to other organisations regionally, nationally and internationally. Its vast education programme, offering the widest range of musical experiences to all sectors of the community, adds great value and an enhanced dimension to the CETL.
