The University of Newcastle was the lead institution for the CETL, with Durham as a second foundation partner. Newcastle University's International Centre for Music Studies (ICMuS) and Durham University's Music Department have a long history of collaboration and co-operation, and the CETL was based principally on their established excellence.
The future development of the other North East institutions (Northumbria, Sunderland and Teesside) has been integral to the success of the CETL. They have been essential partners in the general dissemination strategy, and have also brought their own areas of expertise to particular projects.
The Open University also added a further dimension of excellence, through its longstanding and extensive pedagogical experience in open and distance learning delivered to students of diverse backgrounds.
The Sage Gateshead (an associate partner) is a centre for music whose home is an iconic Norman Foster building on the river Tyne. The organisation has helped to link the universities to one another and to other organisations regionally, nationally and internationally. Its vast education programme, offering the widest range of musical experiences to all sectors of the community, has added great value and an enhanced dimension to the CETL.
