A programme of action research into small-group music making as a means of enriching and accelerating the learning experience of student performers (a need which is acute given the modest resources available for 1:1 instrumental and vocal tuition outside music conservatoires). Individual performing groups will operate as ‘companies’ (analogous to small theatrical collectives). Outcomes will be showcased at events such as The Sage Gateshead’s already established programme of annual student music festivals (eg at ‘Sound ’05, ’06, ’07’). A further research dimension – of significance to the entire HE sector – is suggested by the proposed inclusive approach: how does one assess performances in different genres but within the same course or module? What do criteria of judgement from these different performing traditions have to say to each other?
